Business:- Nigerian officials have received N712 billion as bribes, NBS reports reveal

To premiere NRTC Weekly this week, we start with the business segment. Everyone knows the trend of bribery in Nigeria especially in public service. You cannot get something done in public service unless you grease the palms of public officials. Services that are meant to be free have prices on them, the ones that are priced are doubled.

In other words, public officials are one of the sole planters of the corruption seed. The bribery of public officials might have seemed intangible until the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics revealed a shocking report.

The report read in part, “According to the 2023 survey, the average cash bribe paid was 8,284 Nigerian Naira. While the nominal average cash bribe size increased since 2019 (from NGN 5,754), this does not account for inflation. The inflation-adjusted average cash bribe in 2023 was 29 percent smaller than in 2019 in terms of what could be bought with the money.

“Overall, it is estimated that a total of roughly NGN 721 billion (US$1.26 billion) was paid in cash bribes to public officials in Nigeria in 2023, corresponding to 0.35 percent of the entire Gross Domestic Product of Nigeria.”

It might be safe to say that some bribery went on without record. It is possible the amount revealed is only a quota of the big chunk of the bribery money received. These reports far from being impressive, it only show the deep-rootedness of corruption in the public service.
