Politics: Thai Prime Minister ousted amid political turmoil

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that Thailand’s volatile political landscape plunged deeper into turmoil after the Constitutional Court ousted Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

The court found her guilty of ethical misconduct linked to a past phone call with a former Cambodian leader over a border dispute.

The ruling dismissed her entire cabinet, extending the country’s long record of instability. Paetongtarn became the fifth Thai prime minister removed by the judiciary since 2008, a pattern critics said reflected the courts’ power to override the electorate’s will.

The decision threw the country into fresh uncertainty as rival factions jostled for influence. The opposition People’s Party immediately set conditions for backing a new leader, demanding parliament’s dissolution and fresh elections.

Analysts, however, warned that another election might fail to resolve Thailand’s deep-rooted divisions, underscoring the enduring struggle between elected governments and the conservative establishment.

Sports: US Open delivered drama, high-stakes tennis

The US Open delivered a week of intense drama at Flushing Meadows, thrilling fans with expected victories and shocking upsets, NRTC WEEKLY learnt.

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz advanced despite setbacks, with Djokovic, 38, battling a back injury to reach the fourth round, while Alcaraz overcame a brief knee scare to stay on course for a second title.

In the women’s draw, young star Coco Gauff crashed out, while American Taylor Townsend stunned fifth seed Mirra Andreeva in dominant fashion. Several other seeded players also fell, heightening the unpredictability of the tournament.

As the second week began, attention shifted to which contenders could maintain form and push toward the finals.

Business: US Court struck down trump tariffs

A U.S. federal appeals court struck down most of the tariffs imposed under Donald Trump, ruling that he had overstepped his authority, NRTC WEEKLY gathered.

The court found that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 did not empower presidents to impose tariffs, invalidating Trump’s “reciprocal” duties on China, Canada, and Mexico.

Although the court paused enforcement to allow an appeal to the Supreme Court, the decision shook the business world.

The Trump administration had defended the tariffs as a response to a national emergency over trade deficits, but judges rejected that argument.

The ruling injected uncertainty for importers and exporters, while many welcomed it as a possible step toward easing global trade tensions. The final outcome now rested on whether the Supreme Court would hear the case and how it would rule.

Metro: Violent protests rocked Jakarta after police incident

NRTC WEEKLY learnt that Jakarta descended into chaos after protests over a police incident spiralled into violence.

The unrest erupted when a police armoured vehicle struck and killed a motorcycle ride-share driver during a demonstration, sparking outrage over lawmakers’ allowances, rising living costs, and police misconduct.

Protesters hurled stones and torched public buildings as clashes escalated. A fire engulfed a five-storey building near a police compound, trapping and killing three people.

Police responded with tear gas and water cannons, drawing condemnation from activists and civil society groups who denounced the heavy-handed tactics.

The violence tested Indonesia’s new government as public pressure mounted to hold those responsible accountable and address deeper inequalities fuelling unrest across the country.

Leading stories: Russia, China condemned US missile deployment in Japan

Russia and China condemned the United States after it deployed its Typhon intermediate-range missile system to Japan for joint military exercises, the NRTC WEEKLY gathered.

Moscow branded the move a “direct strategic threat” and warned of “appropriate military-technical measures” if Japan failed to reconsider.

Beijing also urged Washington and Tokyo to halt the deployment and prioritise regional peace. The development intensified tensions in the Asia-Pacific, where the US sought to bolster its deterrence against China.

Russia and China, however, viewed the move as part of Washington’s broader strategy to encircle them with military assets.

The deployment added a fresh layer of complexity to an already fragile geopolitical landscape.
