The leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun East Senatorial District have rallied behind Governor Dapo Abiodun, adopting him as their consensus candidate for the 2027 Senate race.

The endorsement was announced at a well-attended stakeholders’ meeting in Ijebu-Ode.

It positions the governor for a smooth transition to the National Assembly at the end of his second term in office.

The gathering reflected an unusual level of cohesion within the party, with key stakeholders across all tiers in attendance.

From councillors and ward executives to senior party figures and former lawmakers, the meeting brought together a broad coalition of voices within Ogun East.

Party elders, members of advisory councils, and both serving and former legislators also lent their weight to the decision, signalling a district-wide consensus rather than a factional move.

Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, former senator Lekan Mustapha said the endorsement was based on the governor’s track record.

He described Abiodun as a leader with both the competence and intellect to represent the district at the national level.

He added that party leaders would formally convey the decision to the governor and take practical steps to support his candidacy, including organising the purchase of his nomination forms.

The Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, described the move as historic.

He noted that Abiodun’s role in stabilising the party and delivering on governance made him a natural fit for the Senate.

Similar sentiments

Federal and local representatives echoed similar sentiments.

Femi Ogunbanwo pointed to the relative peace and development recorded under the current administration.

He expressed confidence that such gains would be amplified at the national level.

At the grassroots, local government leaders reinforced the call, urging the governor to accept what they described as a collective mandate from the people.

The meeting drew influential figures in Ogun East politics, including former senator Gbenga Kaka and APC zonal chairman Adedoyin Adeleke.

Party elders and mobilisers also turned out in strong numbers, further underscoring the depth of support behind the endorsement.
