The long-standing isolation of several communities in Remoland is coming to an end as the Ogun State Government nears the completion of the strategic 12.4-kilometre Ilisan–Ilara–Akaka–Ode-Remo Road.

In a project update released on Wednesday, the state government confirmed that the heavy-duty construction phase has been completed.

Contractors have completed all asphalt laying, extensive drainage systems, and earthworks along the critical Ode-Remo–Akaka and Ilisan–Ilara–Akaka corridors.

The project is now in its final decorative and safety phase, with only lane markings and kerb painting left to be done.

One of the most significant impacts of the reconstruction is the elimination of a perilous travel habit.

For years, residents and commuters travelling from Ilishan to Akaka, Ilara, and Ode-Remo frequently crossed the active airport runway to save time, bypassing the formerly dilapidated road network.

The new 12.4km stretch provides a modern, paved alternative, permanently removing the high-risk necessity of trespassing on aviation grounds.

The road, which was once a “deplorable” route that nearly pushed local markets into extinction, is already being hailed as a catalyst for the region’s socio-economic rebirth.

The reconstruction has restored connectivity for communities that were previously cut off by gully-like potholes, ensuring full access once again.

It has also provided a major boost to agriculture, as farmers in Akaka and neighbouring towns can now transport their produce to markets without the risk of vehicle breakdowns.

Additionally, improved road visibility and drainage have significantly enhanced safety, reducing accidents and flooding during the rainy season.

The project aligns with the Governor Dapo Abiodun administration’s Urban Renewal Programme, which has seen over 1,500km of roads rehabilitated or reconstructed across the state.

Government officials noted that the completion of this corridor will further strengthen the infrastructure anchor surrounding the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, turning the entire Remoland area into a burgeoning industrial and logistics hub.
