1794- First successful C-section

Dr Jesse Bennett Memorial Stand

Today in 1794, Dr Jesse Bennett performed the first successful cesarean section in the United States. The patient happened to be his wife at the birth of their only child. There happened to be complications during her labour and so she requested a C-section. Due to its unsuccessful nature from past procedures, the doctor in charge refused to operate. So, Bennett performed the surgery himself. Both mother and child survived. This was a landmark moment in medical history as C-sections were only performed on mothers that were already deceased so that the fetus would be saved.

1943- First US president to travel overseas

Roosevelt on the flight

January 14th 1943 marks former president Franklin D. Roosevelt as the first president to travel by air for official business. He arrived in Casablanca, Morocco flying in a Pan Am Boeing 314 flying boat dubbed the Dixie Clipper. Roosevelt had a meeting with Winston Churchill for a World War II strategy meeting. At the frail age of 60, Roosevelt made the 17,000-mile round trip.

1964- Jackie Kennedy makes her first televised appearance after J.F Kennedy’s assassination

Jacqueline Kennedy made her first appearance on television after the death of her husband on Jan 14, 1964. Though brief, her moving statement conveyed her gratitude towards the public for their condolences messages following the president’s death. She wished to acknowledge every letter and announced that she would place them in the library built in JFK’s honour.

Today is the Clarinet’s birthday. On this day, German instrument maker Johann Christoph Denner invented the clarinet in Nuremberg, Germany. The clarinet was a modified version of a simpler reed instrument, the chalumeau. This invention allowed for greater musical expressions. Mozart was the first composer to use the clarinet in a symphony.

1970- Diana Ross and the Supremes perform their last concert

The Supremes

The successful American pop group of the 1960s, the Supremes, performed their last concert at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas. Best friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Diana Ross formed the group. This last act would mark their break-up and the launch of Diana’s solo career.
