OPay has dismissed as false a viral message claiming the fintech company would be shutting down or going on an indefinite break from September 1, 2026.
The company urged customers to disregard the circulating message, describing it as entirely fabricated.
“OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” the company stated in a social media post on today. The fintech advised users to verify information through its official communication channels before sharing or acting on viral messages.
The latest fake news is part of a recurring pattern of misinformation targeting the fintech platform. In recent months, OPay has had to debunk several false claims, including rumours that customer accounts had been wiped out, deposits lost, or that the company’s operations had been shut down.

In March 2026, the company dismissed reports that its offices in Lagos and Abuja were sealed by the Nigeria Revenue Service over alleged tax non-compliance. The fintech also launched a trust-focused brand campaign, “OPay Is Okay,” in response to years of rumours and misinformation.

OPay urged users to pay close attention to suspicious posts and identify “red flags” contained in the viral message. The company warned that the alleged notice was not an authentic communication.
It currently maintains its official X presence under @OPay_NG, where it provides updates and engages with customers. The company urged Nigerians to “filter the noise” and rely only on its verified platforms for authentic updates.
OPay has reassured its users that all customer accounts remain safe and secure. The company described the circulating claims as “false and misleading” and added that it is prepared to take legal action against individuals or groups responsible for spreading misinformation.
OPay operates as a licensed institution regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria, with deposits insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.
OPay users are advised not to panic or act on the viral message without first confirming its authenticity through the company’s official channels. The fintech platform remains fully operational, and all customer funds are secure.
