Premier League fans turn on VAR as survey reveals overwhelming backlash

The VAR has been heavily criticised by a large section of Premier League fans.

According to the latest findings by the Football Supporters’ Association, a strong majority of fans want the video assistant referee (VAR) removed from the Premier League.

The survey, which captured responses from 7,981 supporters, shows deep frustration. Notably, 76% are in favour of scrapping the system entirely.

90% of fans feel VAR makes matches less enjoyable.

92% say VAR kills the spontaneous joy of celebrating goals.

These numbers indicate the irritation of fans; they also reveal a shift in how fans experience football. Matchday emotions, once raw and immediate, are now felt as delayed and uncertain.

Supporters reject VAR despite league’s firm resistance to change

Only 3.4% of match-going fans believe VAR improves football.

81% prefer watching games without VAR.

While debates continue, the disconnect between fans and decision-makers is widening, and many supporters argue that technology has disrupted football’s natural rhythm.

Interestingly, this is not the first pushback. In 2024, Wolverhampton Wanderers attempted to abolish VAR. However, the motion was heavily defeated 19–1.
