The Premier League has confirmed that matches involving Arsenal and Crystal Palace in December have been rescheduled to reduce the mounting congestion in both clubs’ fixture calendars.
The decision comes as both sides prepare for their EFL Cup quarter-final clashes, following intense negotiations with league officials and broadcasters.
Originally, Arsenal’s trip to Everton and Crystal Palace’s visit to Leeds United were slated for 14:00 GMT on Sunday, December 21. However, to create some breathing room for recovery and preparation, both fixtures will now be played a day earlier, on Saturday, December 20, at 20:00 GMT.
The adjustment grants each side an additional 24 hours before their EFL Cup quarter-final matches on December 23, which had already been postponed by the EFL. That earlier delay arose because Crystal Palace’s European commitments created a congested schedule that would have seen them play three matches in five days – a physically demanding and logistically challenging scenario.
Arsenal reject Christmas Eve Cup fixture

The EFL reportedly explored the idea of scheduling the EFL Cup quarter-final for Christmas Eve, but Arsenal opposed the proposal, citing the impact such timing would have on supporters and club staff. The Gunners argued that traveling fans would face serious transport challenges during the holiday period, while stadium personnel would have to work late on a family-focused day.

To ease the burden on fans, Arsenal have pledged to provide subsidised transport to Merseyside for the rescheduled Everton fixture, with coaches available for £10 per seat.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace will still face a demanding stretch, with their UEFA Conference League tie against Finnish side KuPS set for Thursday, December 18. That means the Eagles will still play two matches within three days, despite the Premier League’s best efforts to lighten their load.
The rearrangements only goes further to showcase the ongoing challenge of fixture congestion in English football, especially for teams juggling domestic and European commitments. Still, both clubs will welcome any additional preparation time they can get in a month that promises to test their depth, stamina, and resilience.
