Former Netherlands international Quincy Promes has been arrested in Dubai, following an official extradition request from Dutch authorities.
According to reports from De Telegraaf, the 33-year-old footballer was taken into custody at his residence as legal troubles continue to mount against him.
This development follows his earlier conviction in absentia in February 2024, where he was sentenced to six years in prison. Promes was found guilty of involvement in smuggling over one tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands via Antwerp, a crime that has deeply tarnished his football legacy.

Stabbing/assault convictions
Moreover, his criminal record extends beyond the smuggling case. In 2020, Promes was convicted of stabbing his own nephew during a heated family gathering. Shortly after this violent incident, he made a €8.5 million transfer from Ajax to Spartak Moscow. This raised further controversy in the Dutch media.

Despite his current legal challenges, Promes had expressed a willingness to return to the Netherlands to appeal both convictions – on the condition that he would not be detained. However, this request was swiftly rejected by the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. This obviously complicated his plans for legal defence.
While the Dutch public prosecution service refused to comment on his arrest, it previously confirmed that Promes’ extradition request was “at an advanced stage” with steady progress being made behind the scenes. This latest arrest now brings that process closer to resolution.
Promes, once capped 50 times by the Netherlands national team, had been playing for Dubai United FC during the recent season. However, he is now unattached and available on a free transfer, though his footballing future hangs in serious doubt given his ongoing legal predicament.
Confirming the arrest, Promes’ legal representative declined to offer further statements to the press. With both drug trafficking and assault appeals still pending, the former Ajax star’s fate remains uncertain as legal proceedings intensify.
