The open letter, posted under Bruno Fernandes’ Instagram, demands that Portugal’s players “fight for him” and “pass him the ball” in what could be Ronaldo’s final World Cup. The post has amassed over 20,000 comments, revealing a deep divide among supporters.
The controversy erupted after Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo. Fans flooded the Instagram accounts of midfielders Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Vitinha with criticism, blaming them for the dropped points.
The fan’s emotional plea painted Ronaldo as a lonely warrior who carried Portugal for two decades. It referenced his tears after the Euro 2004 final defeat and the 2006 World Cup semi-final exit. The message urged the current generation to create chances for the 41-year-old and give him the farewell he deserves.
“This could be his last dance on football’s biggest stage,” the fan wrote. “Fight for him. Run for him. Leave everything on the pitch for him.”
Neves comments spark backlash
The tension was amplified by João Neves’ post-match comments. The 20-year-old midfielder described Ronaldo as “a normal player” like any other teammate, a remark that many fans interpreted as disrespectful.
Portugal manager Roberto Martínez defended Neves while also affirming Ronaldo’s unique status. “Cristiano Ronaldo’s position in this squad can never be underestimated,” Martínez said. “He is a symbol of Portuguese football. Every player in this squad knows exactly what he represents.”
