The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to developing the education sector by investing in teacher development and creating a supportive learning environment for students.
Speaking through his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, at the 27th Quarterly Meeting of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Sanwo-Olu highlighted the state’s focus on building modern educational infrastructure.
He pointed to the recent commissioning of new classroom blocks, vocational training centres, and digital literacy initiatives under the state’s THEMES Plus Agenda as evidence of this commitment.
He stressed that investing in children’s education is a direct investment in Nigeria’s future.
Addressing the meeting’s theme, “Bridging the Gap between Planning and Performance towards Achieving Quality Basic Education,” the governor emphasised the need to translate policies into tangible improvements for millions of Nigerian children.

He acknowledged critical challenges discussed at previous meetings, including fund utilisation, unlocking matching grants, infrastructure deficits, teacher quality, and the issue of out-of-school children.
He warned that failing to address these issues would deprive children of conducive learning environments and teachers of the necessary resources.
The governor also noted the importance of accountability and data-driven decision-making, stating that transparent reporting mechanisms would help ensure that every investment in education delivers measurable improvements.
In her welcome remarks, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, called for a collaborative effort among all education stakeholders, particularly state and local governments, to ensure that all Nigerian children have access to quality education.
She stressed the importance of partnership with local authorities to improve supervision, accountability, and transparency.
Garba emphasised that true progress requires state-level commitment and consistency, which are crucial to achieving the vision of universal basic education in the country.
She also highlighted the importance of inclusion and effective mechanisms to track progress, ensuring that no child is left behind.
