The Teranga Lions of Senegal made global headlines after coming from behind to secure a famous 3-1 victory over England’s Three Lions.
With the result, the West Africans broke England’s 22-game unbeaten run in their win against the European giants.
The historic result unfolded at the City Ground in Nottingham, where the African champions produced a clinical and commanding display.
Moreover, this victory extended Senegal’s remarkable unbeaten run to 24 matches. Crystal Palace forward Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring with a composed finish, while Habib Diarra doubled the lead with a sharp strike. 26-year-old Metz winger Cheikh Sabaly sealed the memorable win with a third, as Senegal dominated proceedings.

However, England’s captain Harry Kane, who scored for the Europeans, admitted that his side fell short in almost every department.

Speaking with frustration after the final whistle, Kane said, “Not good enough. With and without the ball, we just didn’t click.” He also emphasised the urgency to find form quickly, especially with the World Cup drawing nearer.
Importantly, Kane acknowledged that England’s struggles stem from multiple factors, including tactical adjustments and fresh faces lacking international experience. Yet, despite these challenges, he insisted there could be “no excuses” for such a lacklustre performance.
England manager Thomas Tuchel also voiced his displeasure, calling the result deeply disappointing. He suggested that the team felt “frozen” for large parts of the match and failed to play with the needed energy.
Tuchel hinted that the squad deserved a little more but admitted their performance lacked the aggression and sharpness required at this level.
Statistically, the gulf between the sides was clear. While Senegal fired nine shots on target to trouble Dean Henderson, England managed just four efforts
Consequently, this defeat marks Tuchel’s first loss since taking charge of England. The loss ended his short unbeaten run after four matches. The German tactician now faces pressing questions as he looks to galvanize his team before the World Cup.
For Senegal, the victory stands as a defining moment for them and will seek to build in the momentum.
