Super Falcons winger Gift Monday has responded to her exclusion from the Nigerian squad heading to the WAFCON 2024 edition holding in Morocco in July.
The 22-year-old currently plays for Washington Spirit in the NWSL. She scored four goals and assisted once in nine league games this season.
Yet, she was not included in Nigeria’s 2024 WAFCON squad. Interim coach Justine Madugu preferred Chioma Okafor, a university-level player without professional experience.
This decision surprised many observers. Monday had been consistent at FC Robo Queens and later impressed at Tenerife in Spain.

With Nigeria facing Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria in a competitive group, several analysts expected her presence on the team.
Her exclusion prompted conversations about form, merit, and selection strategy. While some defended the coach’s choice as tactical, others questioned the omission of a proven forward.

The football community noted that Monday’s record offers more than raw numbers; it shows discipline, growth, and consistency.
Her work rate and positioning have matured significantly, so choosing a less experienced player instead stirred debate about selection standards, timing, and intent.
On her statement
Monday responded to her omission with striking clarity. On X, she confirmed her full fitness and voiced her continued support for the Super Falcons.
Her words were intentional, free of emotion-driven reactions. She encouraged her teammates to write history and promised her return.
Her resolve reinforces what the jersey symbolizes: loyalty, patience, and unyielding spirit. She neither blamed nor begged. She acted.
In a time of silence, she spoke wisely. Her journey remains forward. When the next call comes, she will be ready.
For now, she watches with hope and stands with pride. Her absence may be felt, but her voice, strength, and example stay present.
