Edidiong Joseph Umoafia produced a masterclass performance to snatch gold in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event. His dominant display at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games delivered Team Nigeria’s fourth gold medal of the competition.
The star athlete took control early by lifting 147kg in the snatch event. Subsequently, he matched the best clean and jerk lift of 172kg to finish with a winning total of 319kg.

Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi claimed silver with 314kg, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses secured bronze with 310kg.

Consequently, Umoafia’s victory continues Nigeria’s strong momentum following Ruth Asuquo Nyong’s weightlifting silver in the women’s 48kg category.
