Team Nigeria has won seven medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and currently occupy fourth position on the medal table. The team has secured four gold and four silver medals.
Para powerlifting delivered Nigeria’s strongest performance on the opening day. Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris all struck gold.
Oluwafemiayo successfully defended her women’s heavyweight title with a stunning world-record performance. Nworgu lifted 123kg to win gold ahead of compatriot Esther Oyema, who settled for silver in a Nigerian one-two finish.
Weightlifter Ruth Asuquo Nyong added a silver medal in the women’s 48kg event with a combined lift of 168kg. Edidiong Joseph Umoafia then secured Nigeria’s fourth gold medal, dominating the men’s 71kg weightlifting event with a new Games record total of 319kg.
There will be more medals today as athletics takes centre stage in Glasgow. Action kicks off at 10:10 a.m. with the men’s 100m first round. National sprint king Favour Ashe lines up in Heat 1, Lane 4, as one of the favourites to advance.

US-based 200m speed star Ella Onojuvwevwo and high jumper Temitope Adeshina have arrived to boost Nigeria’s athletics campaign. Several Nigerian athletes remain in contention for medals as competition continues.
The Nigerian contingent is scheduled to compete in athletics, para-athletics, weightlifting, wrestling and women’s beach volleyball on Monday. Team Nigeria will aim to climb the medal table as the Games progress.
