UNICEF appoints Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef as new Nigeria country representative


The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced the appointment of Ms. Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef as the new Country Representative for Nigeria.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, Wafaa brings with her over two decades of international experience in humanitarian and development efforts.

“Wafaa brings a wealth of experience and leadership to Nigeria’s efforts to improve the lives of children and communities across the country,” the statement read.

Before taking on her new role in Nigeria, Wafaa served as the UNICEF Representative in Somalia, where she made remarkable progress in promoting the rights and well-being of children in a highly complex humanitarian setting.

Throughout her career, Wafaa has held senior positions within various UN agencies, including OCHA, UNICEF, and the World Food Programme. Her assignments have taken her to several countries, including Sudan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Syria, and Ethiopia. She has also served in global leadership capacities with OCHA in New York and Geneva.

The statement further highlighted that her career started in Sudan, where she worked in the private sector, academia, and with non-governmental organisations, focusing on initiatives for displaced people and environmental sustainability.

Wafaa holds multiple academic qualifications: a Master of Architecture from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, a Master of Science in Physical Planning from the University of Khartoum, and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.

“In her previous role as UNICEF Somalia representative, Wafaa demonstrated strong leadership in advancing the organisation’s mission amid complex humanitarian challenges. Her expertise spans program management, coordination, and strategic planning in both humanitarian and development contexts,” the statement continued.

UNICEF Nigeria expressed optimism about her appointment, noting that her vast experience and deep commitment are expected to make a meaningful impact on efforts to advance child rights and welfare in the country.

“UNICEF Nigeria is confident that Wafaa’s extensive experience and uncompromising dedication will significantly contribute to Nigeria’s progress towards achieving the rights and well-being of every child. We warmly welcome her to the country and look forward to her leadership in this vital mission,” it added.
