Manchester United face a demanding spell after manager Ruben Amorim confirmed their inspirational captain Bruno Fernandes will be sidelined for at least a month.
The midfielder limped out of the defeat against Aston Villa with a hamstring problem, and the uncertainty around his recovery has created fresh anxiety.
While Amorim hopes the absence will not extend long, the impact is already being felt across the dressing room. The manager accepts that leadership, creativity and structure must now come from elsewhere during this crucial run of matches.
Although there is private confidence that the playmaker could return in mid-January, the gap he leaves is enormous. His potential five-game absence comes at a terrible time as the squad is already stretched.
Key attacking outlets Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are away at the Africa Cup of Nations, and Kobbie Mainoo is also unavailable. Therefore, Amorim insists every department must compensate for the loss, both tactically and mentally.
United battle injuries, suspension setbacks and depth concerns
“It is impossible to replace Bruno,” said Amorim. “I said that this morning to the team. We need to take the good thing, if there is a good thing on that – a lot of people need to step up.”

Fernandes’ durability has always made him dependable, missing barely any football since his arrival in 2020. Now United must adapt without the man who dictates tempo, responsibilities and positioning.

“It is not just the creation,” said Amorim. “At every set-piece he is the guy who is organising the team.” Even during substitutions, the captain remains the reference voice guiding teammates.
Amorim points toward senior figures like Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw to shoulder responsibility, while Diogo Dalot already wore the armband against Villa. Academy youngsters may also receive extended chances as injuries and tournament absences continue reducing options.
Despite defensive shortages and squad imbalance, the coach refuses to surrender ambition. He insists belief must remain high while focus becomes sharper in every match.“
I am confident we can win any game,” he said. “Of course, we have some problems but even without many players in this moment in time I believe in the team and trust in my players. If we are really focused, we can win.”
