Why I left Mavin Records prematurely – Reekado Banks

Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has opened up on why he left Mavin Records, the label that launched his career, earlier than he should have.

The artiste, who joined the label in 2014 and rose to fame after winning Rookie of the Year at The Headies that same year, later took home the Next Rated award in 2015.

He remained with the label until 2018 before setting up his own brand, Banks Music.

In an interview, the singer explained that although his contract had ended two years before his departure, he did not renew it.

He admitted that his decision to move on was largely driven by youthful eagerness to start something new on his own.

Reekado Banks added that there was no conflict between him and Mavin Records, but he soon discovered that managing music business independently was not as easy as he thought.

He described his exit as premature, noting that the challenges he faced after leaving taught him the weight of the decision he made.

“It [my exit from Mavin Records] wasn’t a conflict situation. I was pretty young and pretty fixated on what I wanted to do -I wanted to leave. Anyways, my contract has ended two years prior. I signed a three-year contract and I allowed it to ride for another two years. So, I was there for five years without reviewing the contract.

“So, when it was time, I thought I wanted to do this [leave] now. I thought I could do it now. I just embarked on the journey, as many people would view it, prematurely. As soon as I jumped into the sea as well, I realised how premature it was,” he said.
