Peter Obi gets 48-hour ultimatum to leave Labour Party

The Labour Party faction led by Julius Abure on Thursday issued a 48-hour deadline to Peter Obi, asking him to officially leave the party after aligning with a newly formed political coalition.

This warning came after Obi backed the merger of opposition parties under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform, which was publicly introduced as a new force ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC has already named former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as Secretary.

The Abure-led faction insists that the Labour Party is not part of the new alliance and described those behind the coalition as old politicians trying to return to power.

The group claimed that most of the coalition members contributed to the problems Nigeria faces today and are only seeking to regain political relevance.

According to the faction’s spokesperson, the party has no room for individuals running dual political agendas.

He accused Obi of secretly persuading Labour members to defect with him and said some had refused his invitation.

The statement warned that any Labour member involved in the coalition must quit the party within 48 hours or face consequences.

The group said that the coalition cannot bring about the change Nigerians want, especially the youth, who make up the majority of the population.

It argued that true change can only come through the Labour Party and called on loyal members to remain focused as preparations for future elections continue.

Meanwhile, Obi has defended his support for the coalition, explaining that no single group can transform Nigeria alone.

He said the decision was taken after careful thought and urged citizens to unite in order to build a better country.
