Barnsley FC have confirmed the termination of midfielder Kelechi Nwakali’s contract after his delayed return for preseason disrupted preparations for the new League One campaign.
The Nigerian international, who joined the club in 2022, struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. He featured in only 12 matches last season.
Barnsley management prioritised a streamlined squad ahead of the 2025–26 season under new manager Darrell Clarke. Therefore, the decision to release Nwakali have been deemed necessary for squad balance.

Nwakali, once regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest midfield prospects, previously represented Arsenal at youth level. His European career, however, has been marked by frequent club changes.
