Nigeria’s U17 women’s team have been knocked out of the World Cup after a heavy defeat to Italy in Morocco. Although the Flamingos began with confidence, they could not sustain the momentum against a well-organised Italian side.
The loss ended hopes of repeating their memorable bronze-medal success from 2022.
Nigeria almost stunned the Italians early on. Captain Shakirat Moshood forced a brilliant save from goalkeeper Matilde Robbioni midway through the first half. That moment lifted the team, yet breakthrough chances remained scarce.
But Italy eventually showed their quality. Just before halftime, Anna Copelli danced through the defence and placed the ball past Sylvia Echefu. The goal silenced Nigeria’s bright start and shifted full control to the Europeans.
Italy pull away as Nigeria’s fight fades
Nevertheless, the Flamingos tried again after the restart and thought they had equalised when Nguemo Terlumun reacted fastest near the goalmouth. Yet the Video Support Review ruled the ball had been kicked out of Robbioni’s hands. Therefore, the goal was cancelled, and the setback hit Nigeria hard.
Soon after, Italy punished the hesitation. Caterina Venturelli struck from long range, and her precise finish flew over Echefu. Furthermore, the Italians gained more confidence with every move as Nigeria struggled to recover.

Consequently, the Europeans pushed forward again. Giulia Robino added the third with a neat finish, before Rachelle Giudici sealed the win in the closing moments. Another VAR check confirmed the goal and wrapped up Nigeria’s frustrating night.
Although the Flamingos are disappointed, attention must now turn to rebuilding. The Nigeria Football Federation should begin early plans for the 2026 qualifiers. Additionally, coaches must close the gaps that saw the team lose three matches and concede nine goals.
