Wema Bank Plc has reported a dramatic leap in profitability for 2025, with pre-tax profit surging 116% to N222.07 billion, up from N102.52 billion in the prior year.
The unaudited results, released for the year ended December 31, 2025, show profit after tax growing even faster, up 124% to N193.19 billion.
This robust performance was primarily driven by a 51% increase in gross earnings to N653.28 billion, fueled by substantial growth in interest income.
Interest income, the bank’s core revenue stream, jumped 63% to N577.1 billion, accounting for 88% of total earnings. This was largely powered by a 48% increase in income from loans and advances.
A key highlight was the bank’s improved net interest margin. Despite a 22% rise in interest expenses, net interest income more than doubled, growing 103% to N360.1 billion. This indicates significantly improved efficiency in converting customer deposits into profitable lending.

The bank’s balance sheet strengthened considerably, with total assets crossing the N5 trillion mark—a 41% increase. Customer deposits grew by 30% to N3.28 trillion, while loans and advances rose by 45% to N1.75 trillion.
Shareholders’ equity witnessed an extraordinary 144% increase to N621.7 billion, bolstered by a sharp rise in retained earnings and share premium. Earnings per share rose to N7.08, up 46.5%.
Wema Bank’s stellar performance has been rewarded by the market. Its stock was the best-performing banking stock in 2025, with a year-to-date gain of 124%.
The consistent growth also translates to value for shareholders, as the bank has progressively increased its dividend payouts in recent years.
