UK-based Nigerian jailed 17 years for raping 19-year-old

A Nigerian man based in the United Kingdom, Gift Oladele, has been handed a 17-year prison sentence for rape and sexual assault after luring a young woman into a wooded area and attacking her in Wrexham.

The sentencing was delivered on Thursday at Mold Crown Court, according to a BBC report.

Oladele, 24, committed the offence in September 2025 after meeting the 19-year-old victim while she was heading home from a night out. He had earlier been convicted of rape and sexual assault during a trial concluded in March.

Prosecutors told the court that Oladele initially approached the victim and her friends outside a takeaway in Wrexham city centre, presenting himself as โ€œfriendly and flirtatiousโ€ before offering to escort her home.

However, the situation turned violent when they reached a secluded area. He allegedly restrained her, covered her mouth, and forced her into nearby woods where the assault occurred.

Describing the victimโ€™s experience, the prosecutor, James Coutts, said, โ€œShe described being terrified; she did what she thought she needed to do to get through the attack.โ€

The court was told that Oladele issued threats to silence the victim, warning he would โ€œfind her and harm herโ€ if she reported the incident. He also threatened to take photographs and post them online before fleeing, leaving her alone in a vulnerable state.

Despite the threats, the victim returned home and reported the incident to her parents, who alerted the police.

Oladele was arrested the following day at his cousinโ€™s residence in Wrexham after attempting to conceal a mobile phone. Investigators later discovered internet searches on the device related to sexual attacks.

Further evidence presented in court indicated that Oladele had an obsession with violent sexual behaviour. At the time of the offence, he was already on bail over a separate rape allegation in Manchester dating back to November 2024.

The court also heard that he had previously been imprisoned in 2022 for a sexually motivated offence.

After serving that sentence, the UK Home Office reportedly initiated deportation proceedings against him, but he challenged the order. He argued that he had no connection to Nigeria, stating he was born in Italy, and claimed deportation would violate his rights.

In his judgment, Judge Simon Mills condemned the crime as โ€œtruly depravedโ€ and described Oladele as a serious threat to women.

โ€œYou subjected her to a terrible violation. You are a dangerous offender,โ€ he said.

In a victim impact statement, the survivor shared the lasting emotional toll of the attack, saying she continues to live in fear and distress.

โ€œIโ€™m petrified, I feel ashamed, and somehow damaged, since what he did to me.

โ€œThe emotional impact has been very significant. I canโ€™t go anywhere on my own anymore. I feel unsafe.โ€

The judge praised her bravery, adding: โ€œYou showed exceptional courage during the incident and afterwards.โ€
