1692- Salem Witch Trails, five loses their lives to accusation

George Jacobs Sr., Martha Carrier, George Burroughs, John Willard, and John Proctor were hanged on Gallows Hill. Elizabeth Proctor was not executed because she was pregnant.

On August 19, 1692, five people were hanged in Salem, Massachusetts for witchcraft. Martha Carrier, George Burroughs, John Willard, George Jacobes, and John Proctor were the five, one female and four male. These five were caught up in the hysteria of the unusual affliction of young women in the town.

1883- Fashion legend, Coco Gabriel Chanel is born today

Coco Chanel was born on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France and died on January 10, 1971, in Paris. She was a French fashion designer who ruled Parisian haute couture for almost six decades. She transformed the black color into elegant casual designs to encourage women to abandon complicated, uncomfortable clothing such as petticoats and corsets. These were popular in early twentieth-century fashion.

Among her now-classic innovations were the Chanel suit, the quilted purse, costume jewelry, and the ā€œlittle black dress.ā€ In 1921, she created the renowned perfume Chanel No. 5, a blend of jasmine and other floral notes. The first well-known fashion designer to incorporate elaborate bottle designs for perfume was Gabrielle.

1912- The Nigerian Civil Service was formed today

Thirty-three civil servants from all cadres founded the Nigeria Civil Service Union. Although the colonial masters founded it in 1912, it is criticized for being secretive and limited. White workers held administrative positions, while Native Americans were assigned menial labor.

2003- Terrorists bomb UN Headquarters in Baghdad

Today in 2003, a truck bomb was used to attack the UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. The United Nations Assistance Mission center, the Canal Hotel, was the target of the bombing. The bombing claimed 23 lives, including political activist Amin Mekki Medani and human rights attorney SĆ©rgio Vieira de Mello, who was the UN Special Representative in Iraq.

The terrorist group Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad’s leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, declared in April 2004 that he was responsible for the explosion on August 19.The unfortunate event led to the withdrawal of over 600 UN members in Iraq.
