Arsenal through to Champions League semi-finals after Sporting draw

Arsenal have booked a Champions League semi-final place despite a tense stalemate with Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.

The Gunners’ 1-0 first-leg advantage proved decisive in a nervy night at the Emirates. The result means the north London outfit now sets up a blockbustre clash with Atlético Madrid in the last four. However, the performance raised concerns ahead of a crucial domestic showdown with Manchester City – a potential title decider.

Arsenal struggled to impose themselves and managed only one shot on target, as the atmosphere reflected anxiety, with both teams lacking fluency throughout the contest.

Mikel Arteta had demanded intensity before the match.Yet, his side looked cautious rather than commanding in key moments.

Sporting appeared more threatening, especially before the break. Geny Catamo came closest after he struck the post late in the first half.

After the restart, the visitors continued to press for a breakthrough. Still, David Raya survived a few nervy moments in goal.

Meanwhile, Arteta remained encouraged by his players’ commitment under pressure.

“Yes, 100 per cent. Especially in moments of difficulty, when we give the ball away,” Arteta said.

“In circumstances that are not very much like us. How willing everybody is. Declan yesterday, he was shattered.”

However, injury concerns could complicate their preparations for Sunday’s big contest. England international Noni Madueke was forced off after a worrying knee issue.

“I don’t know, it was something in his knee, so we had to take him off,” Arteta stated.

Madueke’s availability now remains uncertain ahead of the weekend clash with Pep Guardiola’s side.
