CAN mourns evangelist Uma Ukpai, describes him as a towering figure in the church

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Reverend Dr. Uma Ukpai, the founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, describing him as “a towering figure in the Church in Nigeria.”

The condolence message, signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, on Monday, noted that the late cleric dedicated more than six decades of his life to spreading the gospel, nurturing faith, and promoting the cause of Christ.

According to Okoh, generations of believers have drawn strength from Ukpai’s message of faith, healing, and hope in Jesus Christ.

“The Christian Association of Nigeria has received with sadness the news of the passing of Reverend Dr Uma Ukpai, a renowned evangelist, teacher, and servant of God, who went to be with the Lord on 6th October 2025, at the age of 80.

“Reverend Dr Ukpai was a towering figure in the church in Nigeria whose evangelistic ministry spanned over six decades. Through crusades, teachings, and acts of charity, he devoted his life to preaching the gospel, nurturing faith, and advancing the cause of Christ across denominations and regions.

“His unwavering commitment to the work of God and his passion for the salvation of souls left an enduring mark on the Christian community in Nigeria and beyond. Generations of believers have been inspired by his message of faith, healing, and hope in Christ Jesus,” the statement partly read.

CAN extended its condolences to the bereaved family, the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, and the Christian community across Nigeria and abroad.

“On behalf of the leadership and members of the Christian Association of Nigeria, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Reverend Dr (Mrs) Philomena Uma Ukpai, the entire Ukpai family, the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, and the Christian community in Nigeria and abroad who have been touched by his ministry.

“We pray that the Almighty God will comfort the family and grant them the strength to bear this great loss. May the legacy of his faith and service continue to inspire the Church and the nation. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Okoh said.

The family of the late evangelist also confirmed his passing in a statement issued on Monday. They described his death as a “glorious transition,” and remembered him as a spiritual general, loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to many.

Ukpai, who passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80, was known for his evangelistic crusades, teachings, and contributions to the growth of Christianity across Nigeria and beyond.
