Court clears three overseas labs for DNA test in Mohbad’s son’s paternity case

A Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has granted approval for three foreign laboratories to conduct a DNA test to determine the paternity of Liam, the son of late singer Mohbad.

The decision was disclosed after proceedings by Oladayo Ogungbe, counsel to the deceased singer’s father. According to him, the court authorised one laboratory in the United States and two in the United Kingdom for the exercise.

Ogungbe explained that the process for sample collection would involve all concerned parties. He noted that the singer’s widow, Wunmi, and his father, Joseph Aloba, were each allowed to select one laboratory, while the court independently chose the third facility to ensure neutrality.

The push for a DNA test followed demands by Mohbad’s father in the wake of the singer’s death in September 2023 at his Lagos residence. Questions surrounding the circumstances of his passing had prompted the request to scientifically establish Liam’s paternity.

“The court has eventually picked three DNA Laboratory centres, two in the United Kingdom and one in the United States. One from us, one from them, and the court picked an independent one,” he said.

The case has been adjourned until April 7, 2026, when samples are expected to be collected under the supervision of welfare officers.
