The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has updated its official portal to reflect Professor Abubakar Sadid Umar Gombe as the national chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in compliance with the ruling of the Supreme Court.
The change replaces Shehu Musa Gabam, who had been expelled from the party but whose name was mistakenly restored following a Court of Appeal judgment.
In a statement issued by the SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party confirmed that INEC corrected the record by removing Gabam and other expelled members on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

The recognition of Professor Gombe, according to the party, ends months of uncertainty and resolves what it described as externally induced leadership crises.

The SDP said the update provides clarity and stability within its hierarchy, ensuring that the party is better positioned to consolidate its structures ahead of the 2027 general election.
The leadership tussle had lingered since 2025, when Gabam and several members were expelled over alleged misconduct. A subsequent Court of Appeal ruling temporarily restored his name, creating confusion within the party.
The Supreme Court later upheld the SDP’s decision, affirming the autonomy of political parties to determine their leadership. INEC’s compliance with that ruling is now seen by the party as restoring order and giving it a stronger platform to engage in national politics.
