Gianluca Rocchi, the official responsible for appointing referees in Italy’s top divisions, has stepped aside following a developing investigation. The case, reportedly led by Milan prosecutors, centres on alleged involvement in sporting fraud.
According to reports, Rocchi is being examined for “complicity in sporting fraud” tied to decisions made during the 2024–25 campaign. A preliminary hearing is already scheduled, increasing the seriousness of the situation.
The Italian Referees Association confirmed his decision in an official statement. It also revealed that VAR supervisor Andrea Gervasoni has similarly withdrawn from duties after being placed under investigation.
Rocchi addressed the matter directly, stating: “This painful and difficult decision… is intended to allow the judicial process to proceed smoothly.”
He added that he believes he will “emerge unscathed and stronger than before.”
Italian football faces fresh integrity questions
Further allegations suggest Rocchi influenced referee appointments in matches involving Inter Milan. Additionally, scrutiny surrounds a VAR decision that overlooked a possible elbowing incident.
Another claim involves pressure placed on a VAR official during Udinese’s narrow win over Parma. The referee reportedly reviewed a decision after encouragement, leading to a decisive penalty.

Rocchi also said: “My great love for my association… lead me… to protect such an important group.” Meanwhile, he insists he awaits clarity to defend his position.
