An individual named Emmanuel Odey, working on a contract basis for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has been sentenced to a six-month imprisonment by Magistrate Court 2 in Kado – Life Camp, Abuja.

This verdict was reported in JAMB’s weekly bulletin released on Monday.

According to the bulletin, which received approval from JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, Odey was accused of stealing an HP laptop owned by the Board.

The incident occurred on July 13, 2023, at the Board’s FCT Zonal Office in Abuja.

The charge sheet cited Section 287-289 of the Penal Code as the relevant legal basis for the offense and subsequent punishment.

According to the bulletin, “Odey, a cleaner employed for cleaning services at the Board’s FCT Zonal Office, broke down in tears and admitted before the court to stealing the HP laptop worth N350,000 to pay his house rent that has expired.

“While pleading for leniency, he confessed that he had acted alone but blamed the devil for his act and begged to be given a second chance.”

“The Senior Magistrate summarily tried and convicted the defendant under Section 112(8) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, and sentenced him to six months imprisonment with an option of a fine of five thousand naira.”

The Board observed that in a previous attempt to solve the puzzle surrounding the disappeared HP laptop, it set up an inquiry group led by Superintendent of Police, Joy Abuma.

Her “thorough investigation” resulted in the arrest of the accused individual, who eventually admitted to concealing the laptop at his sister’s place.

Following the interrogation, Mr. Egbe Raphael Joshua, the Senior Magistrate, expressed that the accused, who was a first-time offender, showed regret and did not waste the court’s valuable time. He acknowledged that “youthful exuberance” might have contributed to the offense.
