Arsenal and Manchester City produced another enthralling contest that kept fans glued to the action until the very last whistle.
City struck first through a swift counterattack when Tijani Reijnders released Erling Haaland, who finished with precision in the ninth minute.
The Gunners responded with energy, yet their early attempts lacked sharpness. Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice worked tirelessly but struggled to create openings. Although Arsenal showed urgency, City’s structure held firm. Just before halftime, City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Noni Madueke with a brilliant save from close range.
Questions once again lingered over Arteta’s midfield setup, as Mikel Merino, Zubimendi, and Rice lacked the creative spark needed to unlock City’s defence.

Arsenal’s response sparks momentum
Arteta reacted during halftime, introducing Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze to inject creativity, while Guardiola sent on Matheus Nunes for Abdukodir Khusanov.
The Arsenal changes transformed the contest. In the 48th minute, Saka burst past Jeremy Doku and whipped in a dangerous cross. Although Gyökeres failed to connect as the ball was headed away, Zubimendi struck the rebound wide. Soon after, Eze unleashed a fierce effort that Donnarumma pushed away.
City answered with their own counter. Doku sprinted forward and set up Haaland, but Raya kept Arsenal alive with a vital stop. The action that followed caused a scare in the Arsenal defence as Eze’s clearance ricocheted off Rice as the ball headed towards goal but went over the bar.
Meanwhile, Arsenal pressed harder, forcing Guardiola to sacrifice Phil Foden for Nathan Ake. With Arsenal dominating, City abandoned midfield control and relied almost entirely on Doku’s speed for quick counterattacking opportunities.
The Gunners maintained pressure with clever passing and constant movement, unsettling a City backline that defended desperately under relentless waves of attack.
Martinelli delivers the decisive moment
Guardiola’s substitution of Haaland for defensive midfielder Nico Gonzalez highlighted City’s intent to protect their fragile one-goal advantage. Despite sitting deeper, City’s defence creaked. Doku created a late chance across goal, but no teammate arrived to apply the finish.
Arsenal remained patient, recycling possession with Rice and Zubimendi dictating tempo, while Eze and Saka searched constantly for openings from advanced positions.
Eventually, persistence paid off. Substitute Martinelli latched onto Eze’s incisive pass and executed a composed chip over Donnarumma to equalise.

The Emirates erupted as fans celebrated the long-awaited breakthrough, rewarding Arsenal’s second-half dominance and resilience against City’s disciplined resistance.
For Arsenal, the result keeps them second in the table with ten points after five matches played. Meanwhile, City sit ninth, collecting only seven points in their opening five fixtures
