Nigerian singer and businessman Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has stated that he originated the popular phrase “Detty December,” now widely associated with festive fun and entertainment during the Christmas season in Nigeria.
The artiste made the claim while addressing fans at his Detty Rave concert in Accra, Ghana, explaining that the idea came up during his time working as a show promoter in the country.
Mr Eazi, however, stressed that the phrase has grown beyond individual ownership, noting that it now belongs to everyone who identifies with its spirit.
“While working as a show promoter with my friends, I suggested that we call our December event ‘Detty December.’ Hashtag Detty December.

“So in 2016, me and my guys invented Detty December. And Detty December is all about going back to your roots, having fun and enjoying life intentionally. Detty December is bigger than Mr. Eazi. It’s bigger than anybody. Detty December is for all of us,” he said.
The claim comes amid lingering public debate over the phrase, following reports that Nigerian entrepreneur Deola Art Alade, wife of musician Darey Art Alade, secured a legal trademark for “Detty December” in 2019.
The development had previously drawn strong reactions from Nigerians, many of whom argued that the term is a collective cultural expression rather than a commercial brand.
