Senegal began assertively, probing early through Pape Gueye and Sadio Mane. Meanwhile, Mali survived a nervous start when a possible penalty call went against them after VAR declined intervention.
The breakthrough arrived with growing pressure as Ndiaye reacted quickest inside the box. Diarra’s initial spill gifted the Eagles a simple finish and valuable control.
Moments later, drama followed as Yves Bissouma received a second booking before halftime. His dismissal left Mali facing an uphill task against disciplined opponents.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Mali attempted to rally after the interval. However, Edouard Mendy denied Abdoulaye Diaby smartly to preserve Senegal’s narrow lead. Diarra responded with important saves from Mane and Pathe Ciss which kept Mali within touching distance. Yet Ciss squandered a clear opening after he shot straight at the goalkeeper after a defensive lapse.
Mali’s hopes flickered late when Lassine Camara’s dipping volley struck the post. Still, sustained pressure never materialised during seven tense minutes of stoppage time.
The defeat extended Mali’s troubling trend of indiscipline, with a third consecutive match featuring a sending-off. Consequently, they exit without a tournament victory despite undeniable talent.
Senegal, calm and composed, now await a heavyweight semi-final against Egypt or Ivory Coast. With confidence building, Pape Thiaw’s side remain firmly on course for another continental crown.
