Uefa has launched a fierce attack on Fifa after a stunning disciplinary reversal involving American footballer Folarin Balogun.
The decision has shaken confidence in tournament governance and tensions between football’s top bodies have now escalated sharply.
The United States forward was dismissed against Bosnia-Herzegovina in a Round of 32 fixture at the ongoing World Cup – which the U.S won 2-0 – and expected to serve a suspension. Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter warned that “football must never become a playground for political power”. His remarks echoed worrying concerns within the global football community, as many fear a dangerous precedent.
Uefa reinforced its stance, stating that suspensions “are not a discretionary option”. The body warned that inconsistent rulings undermine trust. Credibility, they argue, is now at risk.
