The Role of Women beyond mere representation in the society

If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.” – Margaret Thatcher

A woman can be a grandmother, a mother, a wife, a sister, an aunt, a niece and a daughter. These descriptions of a woman are in regards to her biological relationship and biological makeup. Is that all a woman really is?

She is more than her physiological makeup. A woman is more than the gender that comprises almost half of the world’s population. Defining the role of a woman in relation only to her biological relationship should be regarded as a fallacy.

Regarding a woman like she is an entity that cannot stand on her own or needs to be attached to other gender should be regarded as a crime. A woman is not the quota of the population that serves the needs of the other gender. She is not the smaller ‘-he’ but the super ‘-he’.

The role of women in the society

The role of women in the society have always been summarized into the roles of childbearing, homemaking and companionship. Any woman who goes beyond these three summarized roles is regarded as being a rebel and being difficult to control. They say such a woman cannot make a good wife.

A woman that shakes the tables of the world beyond mere housekeeping shakes the hearts of men. She causes the root of patriarchy to tremble and stay in awe of her strength. Unfortunately, women like this are scarce because society has given the template of compressed roles to women. The strength of most women have been reduced because the society places more emphasis on their biological makeup and dwindled their ability to bring forth their dreams to life.

What are the roles of women beyond mere representation? What is the role of a woman beyond child bearing?

According to Psychology Today, women are better at attention, word memory and social cognition, and verbal abilities. Tell me why we do not have more women as diplomats and ambassadors.

The role of a woman is beyond being a manipulator who traps men to do her desires by the power of her tongue. Women have the potential of being powerful diplomats. A woman has the power in her tongue to bring nations to agree and do the bidding that favors all. She is crucial to nation building.

Women as diplomats and advocates

In a report made by the United Nations Development Programme in commemoration of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, women bring immense benefits to diplomacy. Their leadership styles, expertise and priorities broaden the scope of issues under consideration and the quality of outcomes.

A growing body of research pointed out the fact that the lack of parity in women’s representation in foreign policy is in fact detrimental to peace. We need more women playing the cards of international peace and international cooperation. We need more Suzanne Borel, Hillary Clinton, Aduke Alakija in the fronts of nations representing them and negotiating peace.

Women in the finance and business sector

Running a small stall to trading international commodities, a woman is more than capable. A woman’s entrepreneurship skill can be harnessed for financial prosperity. She is wired in ways that enable financially sensitivity. With her ability to juggle many things together and think ahead, a woman has exceptional abilities to succeed in finance. The problem of women is that society has refused to give them the platform to table their assets.

The International Monetary Fund reports that women are underrepresented at all levels of the global financial system- from depositors and borrowers to bank board members and regulators. Incorporating women into the financial system could contribute to more effective monetary and fiscal policy.

Beyond petty traders, women are big shots in the finance world. There would have been a lot of Thasunda Brown Duckett, Lynn Martin and Ibukun Awosika in the system if the society was a lot fairer on women.

Women in STEM

In times past, it was believed that women do not have a place in this cause. According to the American Association of University Women, women make up only 34% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and men vastly outnumber women majoring in most STEM fields in college.

Women were believed to lack the ability to carry out exploits in this field. Surprisingly, as the woman’s birth dome is internal, her ideas are nurtured in her. A woman can be a scientist, a mathematician, an engineer or a technologist.

Women beyond mere gender roles

Advocacy and ideologies that restrains a woman from becoming a stakeholder in this aspect should be scrapped. Roles are not confined to one gender alone. Roles are meant for humans not man alone. Women should be given the freedom that life has given them. However, their roles should not be dictated by men because they are as equal as men are.

Women nowadays challenge the status quo of jobs allocated to them. Women should explore, let them be. Even Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said,” The role of women in the development of society is of utmost importance. In fact, it is the only thing that determines whether a society is strong and harmonious, or otherwise. Women are the backbone of the society”.
