Tinubu presents ₦58.47trn 2026 budget to National Assembly

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill, titled Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity, to a joint session of the National Assembly.

He assured Nigerians that his administration would deliver fully on the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The presentation followed the approval of the ₦58.47 trillion budget proposal by the Federal Executive Council at an emergency meeting presided over by the president at the State House in Abuja.

Addressing lawmakers, Tinubu said Nigeria could no longer tolerate leakages, inefficiencies, or underperformance within key government institutions, stressing that the 2026 budget was structured to consolidate ongoing economic reforms.

“We will spend with purpose, manage debt with discipline, and pursue broad-based, sustainable growth,” the president said.

  Briefing journalists after the council meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed that the approval followed earlier deliberations on the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and the Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP). 
  
  He explained that the emergency session was convened to formally endorse the final budget estimates ahead of the president’s address to lawmakers.
  
  Vice President Kashim Shettima added that the meeting was necessary to ensure the timely submission of the budget proposal, in line with the administration’s commitment to maintaining a predictable and disciplined budget cycle.
  
  The 2026 budget represents Tinubu’s third full fiscal plan since assuming office in 2023. 
  
  Analysts expect the proposal to attract close scrutiny in the National Assembly, particularly over projected deficits, revenue assumptions, and rising debt-servicing obligations.
  
  The submission underscores the federal government’s resolve to sustain fiscal discipline and economic stability as lawmakers begin deliberations on the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
