Yoane Wissa’s Brentford exit looms after Congolese forward leaves club’s pre-season training base

Congolese forward Yohan Wissa has left Brentford's training base in Portugal as talks about his departure from the club intensify.

Yoane Wissa’s Brentford future is hanging in the balance, as the DR Congo forward has left the club’s pre-season training base in Portugal and returned to London for critical talks.

The 28-year-old’s departure from camp has added fuel to swirling speculation that a high-profile Premier League move could be imminent.

According to sources close to the situation, Wissa is set to meet with Brentford’s director of football, Phil Giles, in the coming days. The outcome of this conversation is expected to be pivotal in determining whether he stays or exits this summer.

Brentford had previously attempted to extend his contract, but the attacker is understood to favour a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nottingham Forest are all vying for his signature, and each club is prepared to offer European football – a factor that reportedly appeals strongly to Wissa.

Moreover, personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block, particularly for Newcastle and Spurs, whose interest has intensified significantly over the past 48 hours.

Although Brentford initially planned to keep Wissa, especially after Bryan Mbeumo’s £65m departure to Manchester United, the situation has become more complex.

With Wissa turning 29 in September and just one year left on his current deal – albeit with an optional one-year extension – the West London club may be tempted to cash in now while his value remains high, with a potential asking price of £40m or more.

Wissa, who joined Brentford from Lorient in 2021, has been a key figure in the Bees’ rise. He 49 goals in 149 appearances across all competitions. Notably, the former Lorient player was in blistering form last season, scoring 19 goals in 35 Premier League games. That is a return that has undoubtedly heightened his market value and attracted suitors.

Meanwhile, Brentford are preparing for their first pre-season friendly against Gil Vicente in Portugal on 25 July. It remains to be seen whether Wissa will be involved, especially with his future now under serious consideration.

Although he is expected to rejoin the squad when they return to London – if still a Brentford player – the next few days could determine whether his chapter at the Gtech Community Stadium ends this summer or continues into the new campaign.
