Michael Carrick has signed a permanent two-year contract as Manchester United manager. The 44-year-old guided the club from seventh to third in the Premier League after taking over in January.
Carrick arrived at a club in disarray following Ruben Amorim’s sacking. Results were poor, and Champions League qualification looked distant. Carrick steadied immediately, winning his first four matches, including a statement victory over Manchester City. His league record reads 10 wins, three draws, and just two defeats in 15 games, delivering 33 points from a possible 45.
No Premier League club has earned more points than United since Carrick took charge. He secured wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Most importantly, he returned the club to Europe’s elite competition, a financial and sporting necessity that had looked improbable when he started.

Scepticism from the boardroom
The appointment was not unanimous. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who had final approval, privately worried that United might repeat past managerial mistakes. Ratcliffe feared Carrick lacked the personality to manage a club of United’s stature. However, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox pushed strongly for Carrick and convinced Ratcliffe to approve the decision. Carrick will sign a contract for two years with an option for a further season, potentially keeping him at the helm until 2029.
The players are united
Carrick’s greatest ally has been his squad. Bruno Fernandes has thrived under Carrick, recording 19 league assists this season. Kobbie Mainoo earned a Young Player of the Year nomination after a breakout campaign. Carrick restored confidence in a team that had lost its identity.
Carrick will address the Old Trafford crowd before Sunday’s final home game against Nottingham Forest. He will thank the fans for their support during his interim spell and outline his vision for the future. Manchester United have placed their faith in a club legend.
