Most Successful NPFL Team: Rangers players to receive N100m, land each after 9th NPFL title

The Enugu State government has rewarded Rangers International FC with a monumental package for becoming the joint most successful club in Nigeria Premier Football League history.

Governor Peter Mbah announced that each player will receive N100 million and a plot of land. The club’s management will also receive N50 million.

The Flying Antelopes secured their ninth NPFL title on the final day of the season, coming from behind to beat Ikorodu City 2-1 in Lagos. Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo scored both goals to seal the championship. Rangers finished with 68 points, one ahead of Rivers United.

The title drew Rangers level with Enyimba’s record of nine Nigerian league championships. Both clubs now share the top spot in the nation’s football history.

A promise fulfilled

Governor Mbah had promised before the season that every Rangers player would receive a plot of land in the state’s new coal city estate if they won the league. He also pledged a cash reward.

The governor handed over dummy cheques to Captain Nwobodo and head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu. Each of the 25 registered squad members will receive the full package.

The Flying Antelopes’ journey to a ninth title was far from smooth. They trailed Rivers United by four points with five matches remaining. But a strong finish, including wins over Bendel Insurance, Kwara United, and the decisive victory over Ikorodu City, saw them snatch the trophy on the final day.

The club’s resilience earned them a place in Nigerian football history. Their nine titles now match the legendary Enyimba side that dominated the early 2000s. Rangers’ previous championships came in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984, 2016, and 2024.

Rangers will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League next season alongside Rivers United. The reward from the state government will help the club retain key players and attract new talent ahead of their continental campaign.

For now, the celebration continues in Enugu. The players are landowners. The champions are rewarded. And the Flying Antelopes have etched their name alongside the greatest clubs in Nigerian football history.
