Kwara United clinch 2025 President Federation Cup title after shootout victory over Abakaliki FC

Kwara United defeated Abakaliki FC via penalties to clinch the 2025 President Federation Cup for the very first time.

The tense and tightly contested final played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, saw the North Central outfit emerge champions after beating their opponents 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.

Although both teams struggled to break the deadlock during the 90 minutes, Kwara United looked the more threatening throughout. However, wasteful finishing and missed opportunities kept the scoreline blank.

Abakaliki FC, despite being recently relegated to the Nationwide League from the Nigeria National League (NNL), put up a determined and spirited performance. Their defensive discipline frustrated Kwara United for long spells, although they rarely posed a serious threat going forward.

Kwara’s perseverance paid off in the shootout as they held their nerve to convert four spot-kicks. Meanwhile, Abakaliki faltered under pressure, converting just three of their attempts. The Harmony Boys’ composure from the spot eventually sealed their historic triumph, sparking wild celebrations from players, staff, and fans alike.

A historic moment for Sanni’s Kwara United side

For head coach Tunde Sanni and his team, this title represents a landmark achievement and a major step forward in the club’s pursuit of national relevance. It also marks a proud moment for Kwara State, whose top football side now holds one of Nigeria’s most prestigious domestic honours.

While Abakaliki FC must now shift focus to life in the lower division, their journey to the final has earned them respect and admiration. Against the odds, they stood toe-to-toe with top-tier opposition and nearly produced a giant-killing finish.

In contrast, Kwara United’s success will serve as a morale booster heading into the new season.
