Fubara sacks all commissioners, other officials

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has dismissed all commissioners and public office holders in his government with immediate effect.

The announcement was made in Port Harcourt on Wednesday through a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi.

According to the release, the decision followed the recent Supreme Court judgment.

During a valedictory session with his cabinet at Government House, Port Harcourt, held as part of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Governor Fubara expressed appreciation to the outgoing officials for their service over the past two years.

The statement partly read: “Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has thanked members of his cabinet for their services and contributions to the development of the state in the last two years. The governor highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s Independence, and called on all Nigerians to work together with Mr President to build a peaceful, secure and prosperous country and a brighter future for all. Furthermore, the Governor has relieved all Commissioners and other public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgment of their appointments with immediate effect.”

Fubara assured that he would continue to serve the people of the state “with renewed vigour,” while commending Rivers residents for their support and extending Independence Day greetings to Nigerians.

It will be recalled that Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who was appointed as administrator during the emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu, had earlier suspended all Fubara’s appointees, dissolved boards, and placed parastatal heads on hold.

Since Ibas left office on September 18, the future of the cabinet had remained unresolved. Following the lifting of emergency rule, the Rivers State House of Assembly had asked Governor Fubara to forward a new list of commissioners for screening, along with the 2025 budget for approval.
