FG moves to strengthen humanitarian response with new national framework

The Federal Government, FG, has renewed its push to improve Nigeria’s humanitarian response, with plans to work more closely with global partners to support communities affected by conflict.

Vice President Kashim Shettima made this known yesterday at the Presidential Villa while receiving a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), led by Doris El Doueihy.

At the heart of the meeting was the ICRC’s proposal to support Nigeria in setting up a coordinated national humanitarian response mechanism.

Earlier, Doris El Doueihy praised Nigeria’s efforts in strengthening legal protections for displaced persons, particularly through the domestication of the Kampala Convention.

She described Nigeria as a leading example on the continent, noting that its partnership with the ICRC had grown into a strong and productive relationship.

According to her, this collaboration has been crucial in delivering essential services such as healthcare, clean water, and specialised training for security personnel in affected regions.

The meeting also drew participation from the Nigerian Red Cross Society, represented by its president, Oluyemisi Adeaga, highlighting ongoing cooperation between government and humanitarian actors in addressing the country’s evolving challenges.
