UK-based Nigerian cleric, Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, has stirred fresh controversy following comments he made about Christianity and Africa’s colonial experience.
Adegboyega, who leads the Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church (SPAC Nation), made the remarks in a viral video that has since generated widespread reactions online.
In the clip, he alleged that religion was weaponised against Africans during the era of colonisation.
“The white man came to Africa when he came to colonize us. He told us he was selling to us a bigger religion,” he said.
The pastor went on to argue that parts of the Bible were intentionally included to promote obedience and submission. According to him, certain passages were designed to reinforce control over enslaved people.
“In his bible, he’s gone to insert things like ‘sl+ves obey your masters.’ He put it in his bible.
He used God to trick us. He tricked us into submission. He tricked our leaders into submission so that he can use us build his own country.”

Adegboyega further claimed that Western countries have now distanced themselves from religion after benefiting from it, leaving Africans as its strongest adherents.
“Now, Africans are the ones embracing religion and he’s left it because he’s finished using it,” he stated.
He also suggested that younger Africans are beginning to question traditional religious narratives that have long gone unchallenged.
“There’s a new set of Africans coming up who asks questions,” he added.
In another striking comment, the cleric referenced slavery and the role of religion during that period.
“They put our parents in a ship called Jesus and they shipped them in chains and fetters to other countries.”
He ended his remarks with a broader critique of Christianity’s structure and teachings.
“Christianity is a social construct; it tells us how to marry even though there’s no how to marry in the bible.”
