Saraki urges PDP leaders to end litigation after appeal court ruling

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has urged leaders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to halt ongoing litigations and prioritise the party’s stability ahead of the 2027 general electNobody?

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his media office, Saraki reacted to Monday’s judgment by the Court of Appeal on the party’s national convention held last year in Ibadan.

He advised members to accept the ruling as final to avoid missing critical regulatory deadlines.

Saraki noted that the revised timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) left the party with little room for prolonged legal battles.

According to him, pursuing the case to the Supreme Court could jeopardise the PDP’s ability to nominate valid candidates for future elections.

He stressed that waiting for a Supreme Court decision could make it impossible for the party to meet deadlines required for the nomination of candidates.

Such delays, he warned, could also create uncertainty over the legitimacy of tickets issued on the PDP platform.

The former Senate President emphasised that the fundamental purpose of a political party is to provide a platform for citizens to contest elections.

He therefore urged feuding leaders to set aside personal grievances and focus on the aspirations of grassroots members seeking positions in State Assemblies, the National Assembly, governorships and the presidency.

Saraki warned that continued litigation would undermine the efforts of loyal party members who had already invested time and resources in pursuing political ambitions under the PDP banner.

He added that true statesmanship required leaders to rise above personal interests to serve the broader collective good.

Saraki further suggested that the most viable path forward was for the party to convene a fresh, all-inclusive national convention conducted in strict compliance with INEC guidelines.

He advocated a spirit of compromise among party leaders to ensure that all internal interests were fairly represented in the election of new national officers.

Saraki’s appeal came at a critical time for the PDP as the main opposition party continues efforts to resolve internal leadership disputes ahead of the build-up to the 2027 election.
