Three WAEC personnel died in a devastating motor accident on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
They were transporting sensitive examination materials interstate when the crash occurred. The accident severely disrupted the planned distribution schedule and directly caused delays to the WASSCE Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers in some centres.
WAEC stated that emergency contingency measures were activated promptly. Despite mourning their fallen colleagues, dedicated staff worked around the clock to deploy emergency arrangements.
Examinations were eventually conducted in the affected areas after the Council made logistical adjustments.
The examination body further attributed the delays to a combination of factors. These included issues surrounding the finalisation of examination modalities and the late registration of candidates, which affected the timely preparation of materials.
Ongoing security challenges and mass protests against the abduction of schoolchildren also disrupted the movement and timely delivery of examination materials.

WAEC gave the assurance that modalities have now been strengthened to guarantee a smooth conduct for the remaining papers. The Council pointed to improved conduct recorded on June 5 as evidence that its emergency measures are taking effect.
It expressed gratitude for the support from education ministries, security agencies, and other stakeholders, describing them as dependable partners in service delivery.
WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining academic credibility, examination integrity, and administrative excellence throughout the rest of the examination period.
