Adeshina’s perfect indoor season earns field athlete of year

Nigerian high jumper Temitope Adeshina wins top US college honour
Adeshina named USTFCCCA Mountain Region Field Athlete of the Year

Temitope Adeshina, Nigeria’s national record holder in the high jump, has been named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Year for the Mountain Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association following a dominant, undefeated indoor season.

The honour places Adeshina among the elite collegiate athletes in the United States, recognising her exceptional consistency and technical excellence throughout the indoor campaign.

Undefeated season

Adeshina competed in five indoor meets and won every single competition. She opened her season with a 1.85m clearance at the Air Force Holiday Open. She steadily progressed, clearing 1.89m at the Colorado Invitational before peaking at the Mountain West Indoor Championships.

At the conference championships, she delivered a winning jump of 1.90m, her season‑best indoors. Her clearance ranks among the top 10 in the NCAA this season and further cements her status as one of the nation’s premier high jumpers.

Nigerian record holder

Adeshina holds the Nigerian outdoor record with a leap of 1.98m, set in 2024 at the NCAA West Preliminaries. That made her the first Nigerian woman to surpass 1.95m outdoors and placed her firmly on the continental radar.

She represented Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics, reaching the high jump final and finishing 12th overall. Her experience on the global stage has given her greater maturity and consistency this indoor season.

Recognition from coaches

The USTFCCCA Mountain Region covers schools across the Mountain West and Western Athletic Conferences, among others. Coaches and sports information directors vote for the award based on athletic achievement during the indoor season.

Adeshina’s perfect record, combined with her season‑best clearance and her status as a national record holder, made her the standout choice.

The award adds to a growing list of achievements for the Nigerian high jumper, who continues to elevate the profile of Nigerian field athletics on the global stage.
