Diables Noirs beat Rivers United 3-0 in their matchday 1 clash but failed to claim all three points on Sunday. The Congolese side led when Ghanaian defender Emmanuel Ampiah put the ball into his own net in the 28th minute.
The hosts responded well and didn’t let the goal destabilize them in any way. Stanley Eguma’s men poured forward seeking a much needed equalizer but it didn’t come until the 73rd minute.
It was former Lobi Stars striker Nyima Nwagua who restored parity. The lanky forward then sent the home fans into frenzy when he netted his second just four minutes later. His goal put Rivers United ahead for the first time during the CAF Confederation Cup encounter as they eyed the quarterfinal.
Diables Noirs responded well, scoring an equalizer within three minutes of Nwagua’s second.
In general, Rivers United dominated the match with a 61% possession record. The Nigerians also had a total of 17 shots at the Diables Noirs goal but nine were on target.
In the other Group B matchday 5 encounter played on Sunday, ASEC Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire defeated DR Congo outfit Motema Pemba 2-1 away from home. This means Mimosas are level on points with Rivers United and have also qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal.
