Manchester United boss Michael Carrick did not hold back after a dramatic draw 2-2 with AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
He described referee Stuart Attwell’s decisions as “baffling” and “astonishing” following controversial moments. United felt denied a crucial penalty that could have shaped the result differently.
The visitors had gone ahead in the 61st minute through Bruno Fernandes from the spot. That came after a clear shirt pull on Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area.
Moments later, Amad Diallo went down under pressure from Adrien Truffert inside the box. However, VAR ruled the contact insufficient, leaving United frustrated and exposed.
Within seconds, Bournemouth surged forward and equalised through Ryan Christie, as the rapid swing in momentum left United players and fans stunned.
United responded quickly, regaining the lead after a Fernandes corner caused chaos in the box. James Hill inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

The game’s defining moment arrived when Harry Maguire brought down Evanilson inside the box. He received a red card, and Bournemouth were awarded a decisive penalty, which Kroupi Junior converted.

While Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola dismissed Diallo’s appeal, Carrick strongly disagreed. “He’s definitely got one of them wrong because he’s given one penalty for us for the same thing.”

“There’s a two-arm grab. The Matheus one he gives, the second one on Amad he doesn’t. For me it’s two penalties… one of them must be wrong.”
Carrick added, “It’s baffling really to make sense of that… the game flips and changes.”He insisted the inconsistency ultimately altered the match outcome.
Despite playing with ten men, United showed resilience and defended with discipline. However, the late equaliser ensured both sides settled for a point.
United remain in third place in the Premier League standings.
Their focus now shifts to maintaining a top-five finish and securing Champions League qualification.
