Champions League: Bayern record win in Paris; Tottenham walk tightrope after Milan loss

Bayern Munich recorded a slim 1-0 victory over PSG at the Parc des Princes while Tottenham succumbed to defeat on their trip to Milan in their last 16 first-leg ties.

Kingsley Coman, just as he did in the 2020 Champions League final, scored the match winner in Bayern’s win on Tuesday night.

In the other last 16 fixture of the day, Brahim Díaz netted a 7th minute goal to give AC Milan the advantage against Spurs, heading into the second leg.

Bayern beat PSG in France

Ahead of the game in France, there were concerns over the fitness of key players in the PSG team.

Both Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé haven’t been seen as fully fit recently but trained with the squad prior to the Bavarians’ visit.

While Messi started, Mbappé came off the bench. The Frenchman thought he had secured a late equaliser for the home side but his goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Earlier, Coman had scored a volley against his former club to put Bayern in the driving seat in the 53rd minute, following a goalless first period.

PSG fans knew it was always going to be a difficult task conquering their visitors due to a run of poor form lately. The Parisiens had lost their last two domestic games – the most recent being a 3-1 loss to Monaco.

Tonight’s defeat means the Ligue 1 champions have now lost their last three matches in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are unbeaten in all competitions since 17 September. With the win, they are now clear favourites to qualify for the last eight.

The Germans had defender Benjamin Pavard sent off for a second bookable offence in the second minute of injury time.

Advantage Milan as Spurs face uphill task to reach quarter-finals

Another 1-0 scoreline on Tuesday night. This time at San Siro, the home ground of seven-time Champions League winners AC Milan.

Of course, Brahim Díaz’s early strike was all the Rossoneri needed to beat their English opponents in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Spurs will now have to produce a masterclass performance in the return leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium if they are to reach the next round.

In truth, Tottenham were not bad for a long spell during the encounter but their greatest undoing was their inability to produce enough attacking threat which could have resulted in, at least, a goal.

This was despite parading the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Son Heung-min and Harry Kane. The trio were well shut out by the disciplined Milan defence.

Antonio Conte’s men had more attempts at goal but failed to hit the target.
