Former Super Eagles striker John Utaka has taken over as head coach of Montpellier FC’s women’s team.
Known for his pace, flair, and goal-scoring prowess for Nigeria, Utaka’s appointment not only brings footballing clout but also a legacy of national pride to the French club.
From striker to strategist: Utaka’s Super Eagles legacy
During his international career, Utaka earned 49 caps and scored six goals for the Super Eagles between 2001 and 2012. Notably, he delivered one of Nigeria’s most iconic moments, scoring the dramatic winner in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Cameroon.

Moreover, he represented Nigeria at both the 2002 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, and played a key part in the team that earned bronze at AFCON 2006.

Tactical vision meets female football ambitions
Utaka’s coaching ethos reflects the same determination that defined his playing days.
Having honed his coaching credentials in France – where he also claimed a Ligue 1 title with Montpellier’s men’s team in 2012 – he now brings that winning mentality to a side hungry for identity and progress. Combining attacking flair with tactical discipline, he is expected to elevate the women’s team while extending his legacy within the club’s culture.
Given his ties to Montpellier and the Super Eagles, Utaka’s transition behind the bench symbolises progression not only for his own career, but also for African coaches breaking into women’s football in Europe.
